Well, Beirut radio has done it again! And by done it again, I mean direct me to some of the freshest EDM that airwaves can catch and release. A few weeks ago while chilling out to some beats I heard one of the crispest sounds I've heard in a while. Naturally, I was curious and began scowering the internet for the source of the magik. Lo and behold, I found myself led back to the beautiful country of Romania! A place I am wanting to visit more and more, along with Sweden, as I continue to discover DJ's and more music coming out of these two countries!
A new project by David Deejay, Lucian Mosanu, going by the name Mossano, is going to be, if not already a hit! Evidently with nearly a decade of experience in Romania and across Europe, Mossano started his career at the ripe young age of 16 and had started gaining residency at Romanian clubs by the time of his 18th birthday.
Back in 2009 he came out with one of his first tracks, "Indianotech". A track with skyrocketed to international charts and only got more popular with the release of the video a year later. The video which is brilliant put together features Lucian and a mate of his cruising in a VW golden bug down an industrial mod style hallway where two dancers are seemingly trapped to perform. One a young man in a white sport coat wearing a beanie hat that almost resembles the head wrapping of the Sikhs. The other is a gorgeous young lady, fairly orientalised, in a shimmer gold dress, sari like attire shawl, and a red dot on her forehead symbolizing marriage. This lady dancer is then set to the backdrop of a seemingly flower painting and another painting of who seems to be Ganesha. That being said, as simply as this video might seem, it's not simple at all, but very loaded.
Perhaps some of the most culturally conscious material I have seen in a long time, Mossano only begins to express a certain cultural awareness with his "Indianotech" project and takes it to the next level with "Zingarinho". Featured at the top of this post, "Zingarinho", released in 2010 also became an international sensation topping charts in Europe and Turkey. The video to "Zingarinho", narrates a sort of meeting or exchange culture, as our protagonist finds himself sticking out like a sore thumb as the only Caucasian individual eating at South Asian restaurant. In an effort to fit in, he begins jamming out to the local beats right from his table in the corner of the room. Infatuated by the whole sensation of the place, our protagonist becomes even more mesmerized as the most attractive and elegantly moving waitress makes her way to his table to take his order. And not just there to provide service as a server, she also provides the viewer with much eye candy as she is the clips main entertainer/dancer. Finally, our protagonists food arrives and all eyes are on him as he begins to sample from the feast he ordered. Grave tension and nerves mount as he takes the first bite. And as his approval and most jubulant satisfaction with the tastes of his food are expressed, the entire room erupts with smiles, laughter and joy that he likes the cuisine. And if such a presentation of cultural encounter was not interestingly deep enough to experience, Mossano takes up even further by presenting the esoteric Ajna or Bindu third eye port to the soul. Alarmed at what he sees, our protagonist rushes to the bathroom, perhaps concerned he ate too many foreign spices and was hallucinating accordingly. But only to find himself with Ajna himself and then evaporating into another plain.
Mossano has continued to stick this South Asian, Indian-esq theme in his new track "Caramba". And Musical Technocracy will be most excited to see what sort of video clip will accompany this track in the near future.
Fascinated by his South Asian theming, Massono's projects are hardly orientalist, but merely well intentioned exchanges with some of the exotic and unique aspects of one particular culture. I only wish my South Asian language skills were sufficient to perhaps understand the chorus to his tracks.
